Five Star Reviews of Julie's Book

Carol Marine, Artist, USA  - You’ve inspired me to draw again!

I haven't had time to read all of it (or even half - it's a big book!) but what I've read so far is WONDERFUL! I agree with everything you say, and I think you have a SUPER solid method of teaching here. : )

I am very happy to recommend it. December 2017

Juliette Aristides, Artist USA

Your book is lovely- congratulations. It is clear that you put a lot of work and love into this project. I know how long it takes and how hard it is to pull together. You deserve every success. May 2017

A  unique voice in art education.

By Pat F on 13 November 2017

Julie Douglas' superb book 'Notes From the Atelier' offers a fresh perspective on the art manual genre. Unlike most drawing/painting guides, Julie chooses to showcase her students' work to guide the reader through a series of drawing and painting exercises, thus providing an accurate reflection of what to expect.

Having personally undertaken virtually all of the exercises in the book, I can vouch for the clarity of the instructions and their usefulness in moving your practice forward very significantly. The subject matter and media may vary but the focus is always firmly on observational drawing, on learning to see in order to draw better.

Above all, Julie's warm and witty voice comes through loud and clear. You will quickly find yourself internalising her wonderful, encouraging mantras; 'Don't forget to breathe' is a favourite of mine!

I would say that this book has pride of place on my bookshelf but it is too often in my hands to merit that honour! So go on - treat yourself to a unique voice in art education.

Inspiring, instructional

By Cg on 5 October 2017

I’ve been through a lot of artbooks and this is the best I’ve ever seen.

I bought this book for my mother and got lost in it reading it myself. The author is, in my opinion not just someone who can produce brilliant art, but is able to break down the process into achievable steps. I found it motivating, like a good friend in your ear saying „Of course you can. Why don’t you just try it this way“. It shows the way towards independent obsversation and production - not just copying from books.

I loved the fact that student art was also featured. It all felt more achievable somehow. Not just a showcase of unattainable standards. The love of the process, creativity and teaching shines through this book. It feels good open on your lap, it looks amazing on the coffee table. It‘s inspiration in your brain.

My mother loved it too.

By J A O'Hara on 7 October 2017

I too acquired this book before it was available on Amazon and I am working through the exercises with enthusiasm. Julie has a very good approach and it re ignites skills which do need a good brush up . The book gives you an opportunity to appreciate and value your artistic yearnings and really start to look again at what is in front of you in nature. The book is beautifully presented and a find that word 'atelier' is very interesting in its self . It suggests to me the smells and peace of the life room... just engaging with the craft.

Wonderful book!

By Cruet on 6 October 2017

This is a wonderful book.

I was given this as a gift and out of all the art books I've collected over the years this is by far the most inspirational. It has made me pick up my brush and start painting again.

The book has a wonderful mix of the talented drawings and paintings from the author along with ones from students the author has taught. The accompanying writing is clear and methods simple to follow.

A wonderful gift for anyone regardless of level of art expertise.

Being a total beginner I had the privilege of a 2-day course with Julie by the end of which I was the proud owner of a painting never achieved before. This book is a true extension of Julie's teaching ability giving advice, encouragement, hints and techniques to assist the beginner and experienced alike. I would highly recommend this book as a necessary part of the "tools of the trade" (so to speak) for any artist.

It’s a Must Buy!!!

By Tammy on 9 October 2017

This book actually makes you want to draw and paint. It’s clear and honest instructions makes you as the artist feel that you can achieve your goals at your own pace, it gives you the encouragement that little failures are ok and trying again and experimenting is how you will succeed. This is the first book that I can honestly say breaks down the stuffiness of a somewhat closed off artworld where people feel like they are on the outside.... this book definitely includes everyone and I know that’s what Julie intended to do .... it’s a must buy.

Notes from the atelier

By Mrs. H. Johnston on 10 May 2017

There is no substitute for Julie’s classes, but this book is the next best thing. The exercises in the book cover every aspect of observational drawing, some charcoal drawing, watercolour painting and colour pencil work, all with clear instructions and the practical exercises explained in detail. With the various media included the materials necessary are detailed, giving the best chance of success. I have followed Julie’s classes around Ireland for quite a few years. When I started I couldn’t draw, but under Julie’s tuition I have improved considerably. I find the book a very useful tool, with her personality and great range of experience showing through in the way she explains the exercises and gives the reader the encouragement to try the exercises. I thoroughly recommend this book.

Congrats on a superb book...

By Beth on 5 October 2017

I bought this book some months ago before it was available on Amazon. It is sitting - pride of place, on my side table and I just LOVE it. After a busy career that included no time for artistic pursuits, I treated myself to this. I never thought I would be able to draw.

This step by step guide demystifies the whole process. For me it is like having a great teacher by my side - the author is not just a great artist, she knows exactly how we struggle to produce anything and hits the nail on the head every time that is needed - she is a mind-reader.

This book is a wonderful gift for anyone who yearns to produce good art. I am now going to buy one for a special friend for her Birthday!

An unmissable inspiration for all budding artists

By P on 12 May 2017

Having purchased a great many art skills books over the years to help me develop my joy (but not necessarily natural aptitude) of art, I can say without hesitation that this is the best book to learn from and to get inspired by. You need no other book on your art bookshelf!

This book is filled with exercises and stunning photos of her students' creations. It will teach you to see the world in a different way, to dismiss those negative thoughts about your ability and progress and, of course, it will also teach you some fantastic art skills.

This book is not just for beginners but also for those with some experience who want to learn more and makes a wonderful gift. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Well worth the price.

Dont miss this one

By Ben R. on 12 May 2017

Quite unique - exceptional book - Julie is a very special person as well as inspirational art teacher - her love of teaching shines through on every page in this book which will become a 'must have' in the 'art library' of every aspiring and experienced artist - the choice of included and excellent photographs of her students art comes from every level - this is a book designed to help and encourage and her natural modesty shows clearly - those of us who have the privilege to learn from Julie can only endorse, enjoy and continue to learn from this new book - well done Julie and we all look forward to the next book which I am sure will show the same level of hard work that has gone into this one - put me on the list please

An excellent book for all levels.

By Orla Flanagan on 19 May 2017

The exercises in this wonderful manual allow for the exploration of methods, materials and subject matter in a manner which will challenge and inspire, no matter what level you are at. This isn't a painting-by-numbers type book, the exercises here help the student to develop their own powers of observation. The dos and don'ts are very instructive and there is so much wisdom in the pages between the exercises where topics such as procrastination, attitude, doubts, progress, curiosity, teaching and more are discussed. In fact, of all the lessons in this book, I think the most important is to judge our work less and evaluate more, to let go of the end result and really enjoy the process and the learning involved. How interesting!

A particualry good art book

By CM Wright on 15 May 2017

I've bought a lot of art books in my time, trying to improve my drawing and painting or whatever, but I have to say this is definitely the best one I have come across. It makes me feel like I am really part of the class and can hear the teacher's guidance in my ear as I go. Not only is it informative but the language is full of personality and is very supportive. A lot of other books tell you what to do but not why you're doing it, with this book I really get the feeling that I am learning the full rounded knowledge to go with developing my practical skills. I love the dos and don'ts. I also like how the exercises are framed, how I am told what props and materials I need so I don't have to think about it and can get stuck in. I particularly like how each exercise is timed. If the timing says 2.5 hours then I am more likely to stick to that rather than give up after half an hour like I usually do, so this has really helped me a lot. It's a great looking book and really nice to leaf through, with great illustrations. I also found it useful to see all the work by the students who have participated. Definitely worth it.

Pure joy between two covers

ByJohn Henry Shea on 9 October 2017

If you are one of those people who think they can't draw, this is the book for you. The author, clearly a brilliant teacher, simply takes it for granted that we all have the capacity to draw and brings one step by step through the awakening and development of this capacity. One is amazed at what one is able to do in a short time. Aimed at an audience ranging from no experience of drawing to some, one is now nudged, now led forward, while being allowed to set one's own pace - one's observational skills being honed with every lesson. The beautifully produced book is an aesthetic joy in itself and is bursting with technical hints, wisdom and encouragement. This reviewer, apart from using the book himself, has already given it as a gift to several friends.

I have the book!

By Ros Murray on 10 November 2017

I absolutely love this book not just as the excellent teaching tool that it is but the whole presentation. As a book lover, I love the size of it, the feel of it, the look of it, and then it is about my most favourite subject.

But it is not just a pretty thing, as I found out, as I was studying the notes, the demonstrations, the painting tips and the advice. I have bought books to help me draw and paint before ( unsuccessfully) and I can say that this is the real deal.

As a student of Julie for almost two years ( lucky me!!) I can testify with my hand on my heart that this book is a true expression of her ability as an art teacher. She is one of those gifted beings in life, a wonderful artist as well as a great animator and teacher. I can see in her book how she has honed her long, practical, hands- on experience of encouraging and helping aspiring painters into a real masterpiece.

Life has, unfortunately, put an end to my classes, but now I HAVE THE BOOK! YES!

Moreover, this is a book for all ages. As an "above" seventy year old myself, I find it to be a great comfort and inspiration in my old age! And an encouragement to keep on painting.

A wonderful acquisition for a beginner and an improver

By Katya on 27 October 2017

Having gone to one of Julie's watercolour classes (and I so wish I would go to more, but life takes a different direction at the moment) I found that she's a wonderful teacher, able to teach students of any ages and abilities. This really come through in her book - I cannot recommend it enough to anyone either starting out drawing, or looking to hone their skills. A very worthwhile purchase.

A lovely book from an inspiring teacher.

By Marcilio Ficino on 13 October 2017

This is a lovely book from an inspiring art teacher. The physical quality of the book is excellent, with lovely thick glossy pages and vibrant colour - it is a pleasure to handle. The exercises and projects in the book are taken from the course Julie Douglas teaches and have proven to be very successful over many years in improving artistic skills. It is quite a wide ranging course based on observational drawing and covering a variety of artistic media. Throughout the book there is a wealth of pictures showing the artwork produced by her students (which to me appears depressingly good and sets an improbably high standard - still, I'll keep on trying!). I would love to be able to join in Julie Douglas's courses but unfortunately am not in the right geographical area. However, this book is the next best thing.
